I was new to running, and started off with a 10k and a half-marathon. I saw details about an event called Hell on the Humber, or HotH, and thought I might just give it a go. This decision turned out to be best decision I’ve ever made in my life.
Having drunk heavily and done other naughty things for many years things were starting to affect my health, and having to take three tablets a day for high blood pressure and high cholesterol wasn’t ideal at 27. It wasn’t until I turned 30 that I started to do a few small runs to get fitter and to see if I could stop falling into old habits, and it worked. The regimented training and having something to work towards really helped, but I felt I needed a bigger challenge.
After a couple of years doing smaller runs I discovered HotH and signed up for the 12 hour event straight away. Having never done an event like this I was a little daunted but after joining their Facebook page I soon realised that this run wasn’t just for the serious athlete: it was all about your individual goals, however small or large they may be.
After finishing my first event I was hooked, and when the other events were created (Helloween and HoHoHotH) I signed up straight away, and now I seriously don’t think I could miss an event. The whole event, from the organisers to the people who take part, is amazing. The Facebook page is a real hoot too! Has HotH changed my life? Well, having quit smoking and now on reduced medication, feeling happy fit and healthy I can say that yes, it has. The running has helped with all this, but it’s events like this that are so easy going and accessible that make me want to train more and come back time after time.
The health and fitness aspect is great, and meeting amazing people and making new friends is what it’s all about, but the greatest thing for me was meeting the beautiful Cat Shann. I don’t think our paths would have crossed if it wasn’t for this event.
HotH events have changed my life and I’ll be forever grateful for that.
